Now through December 12th, you can view some of Elizabeth Taylor’s jewelry and other belongings at Christie’s.

“Miss Taylor’s collection of her cherished and fabulous jewels, fashion, art, decorative arts and memorabilia will form a landmark series of public exhibitions culminating in four consecutive days of sales.
For this pivotal event, slated for December 3 to December 16, 2011, Christie’s New York will devote its Rockefeller Center gallery space to the public exhibition and sales.
In keeping with Elizabeth Taylor’s life-long devotion to humanitarian causes, Christie’s is pleased to announce that a portion of the profits from the sale of select publications, exhibition admissions and event sponsorships will be directed to The Elizabeth Taylor’s AIDS Foundation (ETAF).”
I had been looking forward to seeing the exhibit – calendar marked and all – but I read the FAQ and discovered that Photography and video cameras will not be permitted in the exhibition, and that the admission price to view the collection is $30.00.
I’m sure that viewing the over 850 lots including Elizabeth Taylor’s legendary jewelry, haute couture, ready-to-wear fashion, handbags and accessories, and a selection of decorative arts, and film memorabilia being sold in the live auction is worth the $30.00 admission, if you are a big fan of Miss Taylor’s, or a high roller who may be bidding (what fun!).
Christie’s Auction House is at 20 Rockefeller Plaza, located at 49th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues.
The exhibit is through December 12, and the sales are December 13 – 16, 2011.

Despite my interest, the $30.00 price tag and the No Photography Allowed rule has somewhat cooled my desire to attend.
In 1999, Christie’s had a similar exhibit of Marilyn Monroe’s belongings, before they were auctioned off.
Admission to the exhibition was FREE, and cameras WERE allowed.
We were privileged to see many, many of her belongings – bittersweet – including some of her bright and lovely clothes:
her little black dresses:

And the dress she wore when she sang “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to President J.F. Kennedy on May 16, 1962 at Madison Square Garden (a mere 2-1/2 months before she died):
I NEVER understand the No Photography Allowed rule.
