17 May

May 31 is my sister’s birthday.

This year – 2011 – that day is also Manhattanhenge.

Are you familiar with the name?

TimeOut New York says: “Witness the stunning natural spectacle that occurs when the sun aligns perfectly with Manhattan’s grid: The setting sun will illuminate both sides of every street in the borough. For the best view, camp out as far east as possible along a broad avenue with views across the island (14th and 34th Streets will do). And don’t forget your camera.”

Neil deGrass Tyson (whom Hubby and I have really enjoyed watching lately on Nova scinceNOW), who is the Director of New York’s Hayden Planetarium and who coined the term “Manhattanhenge”, says this:

For best effect, position yourself as far east in Manhattan as possible. But ensure that when you look west across the avenues you can still see New Jersey. Clear cross streets include 14th, 23rd, 34th. 42nd, 57th, and several streets adjacent to them. The Empire State building and the Chrysler building render 34th street and 42nd streets especially striking vistas.”

I have not yet photographer Manhattanhenge, but I plan to on May 31st. The event also will occur on July 11th.

Thanks to photographers who post wonderful images on Flickr, I offer these stunning images of the past couple of years:
